Fužine is the perfect gateway to the natural beauty of Gorski Kotar. Surrounded by a network of hiking trails for all skill levels, it’s a great base for casual walkers and experienced hikers.
If you’re looking for a short and easy route, Preradović Peak, just outside the village, is a great choice. For those craving more of a challenge and rewarding views from higher elevations, trails to Viševica, Burni Bitoraj, Tuhobić, and Kobiljak offer unforgettable mountain adventures.
Preradović Peak
The trail to Preradović Peak begins near the Vrelo Cave, where a well-marked forest path branches off to the left. The initial section is steeper, but the trail is well-maintained and signposted. As you continue, you’ll reach a scenic walkway with handrails and benches – the perfect spot to pause and take in the stunning view of Lake Bajer.
From there, the path gently leads you to the summit, with educational signs sharing interesting facts about the area’s natural and cultural heritage. In addition to starting at Vrelo Cave, you can also begin your hike near the “Čoka” beach bar, a convenient option if you’re arriving by car.
The hike to the top takes about 45 minutes, and it’s suitable for everyone.
Viševica
Viševica is one of the highest peaks in Gorski Kotar, easily recognized by its distinct conical shape. Surrounded by mountain giants like Velebit, Bjelolasica, Risnjak, Snježnik, and Učka, standing on Viševica feels like being in the heart of a majestic mountain kingdom.
From the summit, you’re treated to panoramic views of the Lič Field, Fužine, Rijeka, the Učka and Ćićarija ridges, and on clear days, even the Kamnik-Savinja and Julian Alps appear on the horizon.
There are several hiking trails to Viševica, ranging in difficulty and length, from a quick 45-minute route to more demanding treks of over six hours.
Because of the steep sections near the base, Viševica is often overlooked by many hikers. But if you’re up for the challenge, it’s worth the effort. One major bonus: you’ll likely have the trail to yourself, allowing for a peaceful natural experience with unforgettable views.

Tuhobić
Tuhobić is a popular and scenic peak in Gorski Kotar, located above the towns of Bakar and Hreljin, right on the border between the coastal and mountainous regions. It’s a great choice for a short, accessible hike with a spectacular reward at the top—panoramic views of Kvarner Bay, Učka, Rijeka, and the nearby islands.
This mountain is ideal for both beginner hikers and more experienced trekkers looking for a quicker route to stretch their legs and train. The main trailheads are located in Gornje Jelenje and Lič.
The upper slopes and summit are covered in open grassland, offering unobstructed views of the sea and surrounding peaks. Be sure to take a break and soak in the beauty of the landscape.
Tuhobić is also unique for its sharp ecological transition between coastal and alpine vegetation and climate. In winter, strong winds and icy conditions can make climbing more challenging, so plan accordingly.
Kobiljak Peak
While it’s not the highest peak along its ridge, Kobiljak is the most well-known and frequently visited. Rising above the southern edge of the Lič Field, the trail to the summit starts from the center of the village of Lič.
The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace and weather conditions. The trail winds through forested areas and gravel paths, with occasional steep and rocky sections. The final stretch involves a rocky ridge, where you may need to use your hands for balance and stability.
Kobiljak is a great choice for hikers looking for a moderately challenging route. For those seeking a longer adventure, the hike can be extended to include nearby Medveđak Peak (1,027 m), creating a scenic 13 km loop that takes around 5 to 6 hours to complete.
Burni Bitoraj
Located in the heart of Gorski Kotar, near the towns of Lič and Fužine, Burni Bitoraj stands out as one of the region’s most striking peaks. Its name, “Burni,” comes from the strong and frequent winds that sweep across the summit, adding to its wild and dramatic character.
Positioned on the transition between continental and coastal climates, Bitoraj is known for its sudden weather shifts, which only enhance its rugged beauty.
One of the most captivating features is the Bitoraj White Rocks, a cluster of striking limestone formations that rise above the forest. Sculpted by centuries of natural erosion, these rocks are among the most impressive examples of karst landscape in Croatia.
Bitoraj is also a cherished symbol of Fužine. Our hotel and restaurant proudly bear its name. According to local legend, when the first settlers climbed this mountain and gazed out over the land, they exclaimed, “This will be paradise!”—and so, the name Bitoraj was born and has lasted to this day.
