A FAMILY HOTEL WITH A LONG TRADITION
International Day of Forests
At the beginning of spring, we marked an important day for nature – the International Day of Forests. Established in 1971, it aims to raise awareness about the importance of forests and their irreplaceable role in preserving our planet. This year, the theme was “Forests and Food,” recognizing the fundamental role of forests in nutrition and securing livelihoods.

Forests are one of the most complex ecosystems and a natural habitat for numerous plant and animal species. They are a source of many natural resources essential for human survival, providing food, fuel, jobs, and more. Sustainable forest management is a prerequisite for preserving biodiversity and environmental stability. It’s a call to action to harness technological innovations for our forests to address the growing threats of deforestation, habitat degradation, and climate change

In addition to these, forests have many other vital roles worth remembering:

They Mitigate Climate Change

Trees store carbon, helping to reduce the effects of climate change. It is estimated the world’s forests contain 662 billion tons of carbon, which is more than half of the global carbon stock found in soil and vegetation. Forests act as natural air conditioners, lowering air temperatures by 2 to 8 degrees Celsius.

They Are a Source of Water

Beyond producing oxygen, forests function as natural water purifiers and supply 85% of the freshwater used by major cities worldwide.

They Are a Renewable Energy Source

Wood as fuel is a potentially renewable and carbon-neutral energy source. Around 2.6 billion people rely on wood and other traditional fuels for household energy.

They Are Essential for Our Survival

Forests are crucial for agriculture, supporting rural incomes and improving living conditions. They are home to countless organisms vital to survival, such as pollinators.

The Importance of Natural Resources for Fužine

The foundation of tourism in Fužine lies in its lush forests and crystal-clear lakes, offering enjoyment and relaxation in every season. The clarity of the lakes and the quality of their waters are closely tied to the health of the surrounding forests, which act as natural regulators of the hydrological cycle. While nature gives generously and unconditionally, it’s up to us to return the favor. By protecting the environment, we not only preserve it for today but also ensure that future generations can enjoy the same natural wonders.

The forests, rivers, and lakes of Gorski Kotar are a rich source of natural ingredients that have sustained local communities for centuries. Today, these same ingredients form the foundation of the exceptional cuisine at Bitoraj restaurant. Wild forest produce, such as mushrooms, are featured in risottos, soups, sauces, and a variety of appetizers. Forest blueberries are a signature element in desserts, with the blueberry strudel standing out as a favorite dish for many visitors.

The expansive woodlands are home to diverse game, including bear, wild boar, and venison, all prepared according to traditional recipes passed down through generations. The quality of the food stems from its freshness and purity. It’s widely known that the healthiest nutrition comes directly from the surrounding nature. Naturally grown, chemical-free ingredients offer the best source of nutrients, and their freshness and mindful preparation are key to maintaining both health and vitality.

How Can We Contribute to Nature Conservation?

Although it may sometimes seem like we can’t do much as individuals, the truth is quite the opposite. Small changes in our daily habits can make a big difference. Here are some simple yet effective actions we can take:

  • Reduce plastic use and choose eco-friendly alternatives
  • Dispose of waste properly and recycle as much as possible
  • Drive less—walk, bike, or use public transportation instead
  • Collect rainwater for watering plants and reduce unnecessary water consumption
  • Respect nature—don’t leave trash in forests, rivers, or lakes

Every step toward a more sustainable lifestyle helps protect the environment and benefits the whole community!
