A FAMILY HOTEL WITH A LONG TRADITION
Easter in Fužine

We have entered Holy Week, a period that prepares us for the greatest Christian holiday – Easter. This celebration is significant in many ways and symbolizes, among other things, the beginning of a new annual cycle, the birth of life, and the awakening of nature. If you ask the people of Gorski Kotar, many will tell you that they eagerly await spring after a long and cold winter.

Customs of the Gorski Kotar Region In our region, (pre-)Easter customs are passed down from generation to generation, and many of them have survived to this day. The real preparations for Easter begin during Lent. Although it’s not as pronounced today, during the time of our grandparents, there were no major social gatherings and entertainment during this period. However, gatherings with family and neighbors were not skipped and took place in a home or in nature. Younger generations especially enjoyed these gatherings. Religious fasting and moderation in food and drink coincided with reducing winter food supplies, and the Lenten menu included more modest ingredients. In any case, a piece of ham was always saved for Easter celebrations.

In the days leading up to Easter, diligent preparations are made for the dishes that will grace the rich holiday table, and for many, Easter breakfast is their favorite breakfast of the year. Cooking eggs with onion skins and decorating them with floral motifs is an essential part of the tradition, as is preparing the generous Gorski Kotar filling. Filling, “nadiv,” “hrge,” or “nadev,” was once a meal for the poor, but today it is a highly regarded culinary specialty that can be enjoyed in top-notch restaurants.

Traditionally, filling will also be on our holiday menu. On Sunday morning, we will serve you a fragrant bread, hard-boiled eggs from a local farm, homemade ham, the famous Gorski Kotar filling, and aromatic spreads. The plate will also feature an ingredient without which many cannot imagine their Easter breakfast, and that is, of course, young spring onions. All the ingredients have passed through the diligent hands of our local producers. When we combine these aromas with the egg tapping and other joys, we instantly wish to spend this year’s holidays in the heart of Gorski Kotar!

Easter in Fužine smells like tradition

The residents of this region have been living in harmony with nature and its cycles since time immemorial, and this is especially evident during Easter. It doesn’t surprise us that an increasing number of visitors from the entire county, as well as our neighbors, choose to spend the holidays and weekends in the idyllic Gorski Kotar region. Times may have changed, and with them, some customs, but one thing is certain: Easter remains a significant family holiday when dear people gather around the table. Sometimes it’s multiple generations, and sometimes it’s a nuclear family in an intimate setting. This day is dedicated to rest, feasting, hope, and gratitude, and we suggest spending it in the most beautiful way possible – in the embrace of nature, with the scent of tradition.

Become part of this family tradition

The Kauzlarić family has been creating the story of the Bitoraj restaurant and hotel for decades, following the tradition of the first pension in Fužina, Neda, opened way back in 1933.
