A FAMILY HOTEL WITH A LONG TRADITION
Fužine – a top destination for all seasons

What do you think of when you hear “forests, mountains, lakes, walking, cycling, hiking, enjoying the snow, game dishes, blueberry strudel… “? If these terms remind you of Gorski Kotar, you’re probably right. Many people would also say that these words bring to mind Fužine, a picturesque Gorski town on the shores of Lake Bajer. The history of Fužine dates back to the 17th century when the Zrinski family initiated iron ore mining in this area. It was named Fužine, derived from the Italian word for a blacksmith’s workshop – “fucina.” The significant development of the town was made possible by the construction of the Karolina and Luizijana roads, which brought travelers and the first tourists.

Few places can boast that they had organized visits from guests as early as 1874. This early tourism tradition in Fužine, a pioneer of continental tourism in Croatia, continued in the following decades, and tourism remains one of its key economic and developmental components today. The rich and diverse offerings have earned Fužine the title of the “most touristy place in Gorski Kotar” and one of the flagships of continental tourism in Croatia.

Fužine is surrounded by picturesque mountains, centuries-old forests, and the beauty of lakes. The abundance of water is a characteristic feature of this area, with three lakes: Bajer, Lepenica, and Potkoš, beautifully integrated into the mountain landscape. The accumulation lake Bajer is an essential part of this destination and one of the major attractions that draw many visitors to Fužine. The lakeside promenade and the path around Lake Bajer with a trim trail are always full of walkers. Besides relaxing walks, you can also go cycling in the fresh mountain air. Fužine offers nine marked cycling trails and routes suitable for various ages and skill levels. Fans of active recreation will find plenty of forest and hiking trails that start from Fužine and lead to surrounding villages and mountain peaks.

The nearby Vrelo cave is another popular tourist attraction. This 4-million-year-old cave is 300 meters long and is the only cave in Croatia with an underground watercourse. It is unique in that it has no stairs, making it easy for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities to visit.

Just a short distance from the town, you can step into the world of the Wild West. The cowboy town of Roswell was built for the filming of the “Winnetou” movie and is another attraction you can experience in Fužine. It has all the amenities typical of a western town, so you can have a drink in the saloon, ride a horse, or perhaps even end up in the sheriff’s jail.

A stroll through the center of Fužine will take you to Dr. Franjo Rački Park (the first president of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, who was born here) and the church of St. Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of Fužine. When it was completed in 1833, it became the tallest church building in Gorski Kotar and a recognizable part of Fužine’s skyline. Visiting the Ethnographic Collection in the nearby Lič will introduce you to the way of life in this region during past times. While you’re there, you can also visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snows in Ličko Polje.
